Cowls are still a hit. And it seems like a new and more creative version comes out weekly. Here’s another inventive pattern, designed by Ginny, that’s fun to wear and knit. If you’re new to short row shaping, this pattern will give you lots of practice. Get your free pattern with purchase of yarn.

Unfolded

No it’s not a sinful pastry but the pattern that piques the most curiosity. So here’s the pattern for those who want to take on the challenge. It’s a bit tricky (not recommended with wine or TV), but fun once you get the hang of it. This 3-dimensional pattern which is part lace, part slip stitch is adapted from my favorite knitting pattern book, A Treasury of Knitting Patterns, Vol 1 (there are 4 volumes), by Barbara Walker.
Look how different the pattern looks with various yarns.
GGH “Softkid”
Cascade “Pastaza”
GGH “Velour”
Double Brioche or 3-D Honeycomb
CO even number of stitches
Notes:
- Use 1 – 2 needle sizes larger.
- CO additional stitches for edge stitches (2 – 3 on each side).
- All slip stitches are slipped purlwise and with yarn in back.
- BO on the right side by knitting together the K1 and YO.
- YO: bring yarn to front before working next stitch.
Prep Row 1 (WS): *K1, YO, SL1; REP from *.
Prep Row 2: K1, *SL the YO, K2; REP from *; end SL the YO, K1.
Row 3: *YO, SL1, K2TOG (the YO and next ST); REP from *. Note: To do a YO as the first stitch, SL1 with yarn in front.
Row 4: *K2, SL the YO; REP from *.
Row 5: *K2TOG (the YO and next ST), YO, SL1; REP from *. Note: Make sure the YO goes over the needle and stays in back after completing this row. The YO will be made when you K1 at the beginning of Row 6.
Row 6: K1, *SL the YO, K2; REP from *; end SL the YO, K1.
REP rows 3 – 6.

Although this is an easy project, the mitered corner is a technique that may be new to the more seasoned knitters. It’s a cozy scarf with lots of warmth without the extra length and weight. Any yarn size can be used. And because it’s worked from the corner you can bind off when the desired size has been reached.

REP rows 2 – 3 until piece measures 30″ on the diagonal or to desired size.
BO and weave in ends. Then fold perpendicular to lacy diagonal.

Notes:
1. Slip knitwise the first stitch of each row to make a clean selvedge.
2. To help keep track of when to increase, remember to YO before the first marker and after the second marker.
Abbreviations:
MM: Move Marker
PM: Place Marker
YO: Yarn Over (bring yarn to front of work). This forms an increase and a hole to create the lacy center.
